GAUR VIHAR (MATA MATH)
Shri Gaur Vihar Ashram or so-called ‘Mata Math’ is about 4 km from Swargadwar in Puri and can be reached by auto rickshaw. We had contracted an auto rickshaw for about Rs. 300 for the visit to the ashram. The road is partly unpaved and the auto ride was bumpy for about 2 km. Situated amid a pretty garden, one can see images of Shri Jagannath, Shri Chaitanya, Radha Krishna, and life-size statues of birds, deer, etc.
When we reached there it was raining cats and dogs, so we thought that we would not see anything there but after some while, the rain stopped and we found the divine beauty of the ashram.
This is the place where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is said to have come during his time and meditated. This place is free for the public. This is wheelchair friendly too. So, if you have aged parents to take here, they will love it.
It’s a nice place to visit. Wonderful sculptures of tales from Hindu “Puran” are there to watch and enjoy. You’ll be in photography mode instantly there inside. Overall a nice place to visit and spend some time. Besides this, the ashram is covered with natural beauty and has many statues which are based on Shri Krishna’s life. This place is so serene and peaceful that one can sit peacefully over there. Unknown to most tourists, the ashram is a quiet place to learn the meditations.
As I’ve mentioned above, the ashram lies in a very quiet place depicting several events and aspects of Hindu mythology, especially of Lord Krishna through various statues. It is a good place to spend 1-2 hours amongst the greenery and peace. No entry fees and restriction is there, you can take as many photographs as you want. This is not a must-visit place in puri but you can add it to your itinerary if you have some spare time.
